Maturity is what happens when wonder fades
I've lived as I've chosen, I've no cause to complain
You start out fresh, yeah, you come out clean
Then you engage the world and it steals that sheen
This city's so powerful it molds your life
It absorbs you in and you fight to keep time
I've been here so long I've become the place
I conform to its patterns and I think its clichés
I want to hear my own voice
Let's do something extraordinary
Let's take off our shoes
And walk right down Fifth Avenue
All the way to those cargo boats and stow a ride
Let's do something really crazy
Let's go someplace they don't talk the same
Dance outside in the pouring rain
And get by on our smiles
She said, "I don't know if I can go with you
I don't know if I really hear you
And I don't know if I'm just scared or if you're crazy."
Ashes are what happens when the burning fades
They lie there together 'til they just blow away
I know it sounds wrong but I expected more
Or after all these years what have we been loving for
Maybe we still have a chance
Let's do something extraordinary
Let's take off our shoes
And walk right down Fifth Avenue
All the way to those cargo boats and stow a ride
Let's do something really crazy
Let's go someplace they don't talk the same
Dance outside in the pouring rain
And get by
